Landscape | Photography | History
In a small peninsula in the southern portion of Lake Garda lies Sirmione - a comune and town located in the province of Brescia, in the region of Lombardy. The city has a beautiful historic center to discover, but what brings so many visitors to this part of the Lake is the medieval castle - Scaliger.
The town became an important fortified strongpoint for the defence of Lake Garda's southern region during the 4th and 5th centuries AD.

The castle truly dominates the landscape of the town and brings a medieval atmosphere to the region.
The Scaliger Castle (founded by the Scaliger family) was built in the 13th century and has been a port fortification, used widely by the fleet of the family. From years 1405 to 1797 Sirmione was part of Austria; in 1888, it became part of Unified Italy.
The small church Sant’Anna della Rocca, next to the castle, dates from the 12th century and was used mainly by the few local villagers. The frescoes in the church date from the 14th - 17th centuries.
